The header information

The spec sheet starts with manufacturer name, model number, and finish option. Three things to verify:

Model number. Confirm the exact model number across listings. Variants ending in different suffixes (e.g., -S vs. -SL) can be different units with different specs.

Finish. The finish option affects the price, and sometimes the exterior depth (panel-ready models add up to an inch of depth for the panel; standard stainless is the baseline).

Year of release. Some spec sheets indicate the model year; others don't. Older model years can be deeply discounted but may have different features than current models.

Dimensions

The most consequential section. Five fields:

Width. Cabinet box width without ventilation buffer. Most full-size French doors and side-by-sides are 35.5 to 36 inches; bottom freezers run 30 to 33; top freezers run 28 to 33; built-ins run 21 to 24 (column) or 36+ (paired).

Height. Cabinet box height without ventilation. Most full-size models are 67 to 71 inches; built-in columns can reach 80+.

Depth (cabinet). The fridge body depth without handles. This is the "depth" number most manufacturers headline.

Depth with handles. The full depth measurement including door pulls. This is the one that matters for cabinet flush installation. Usually 1.5 to 2.5 inches more than the cabinet depth.

Depth, door open. The protrusion with the door open at 90 degrees. Important if anything sits behind the open door.

Capacity

Three capacity numbers on most spec sheets:

Total capacity. The sum of fresh and freezer in cubic feet. The headline number for size comparison.

Fresh-food capacity. The fresh compartment in cubic feet. Typically 60 to 75 percent of total.

Freezer capacity. The freezer compartment in cubic feet. Typically 25 to 40 percent of total.

The fresh-to-total ratio matters for cooking pattern. A 28 cu. ft. French door with 72 percent fresh has 20 cu. ft. of fresh-food space; a side-by-side at the same total has only 60 percent fresh (17 cu. ft.). Energy

Annual kWh. The standardized federal estimate of yearly energy use. Multiply by your local rate to project annual electricity cost.

Ice maker. Yes/No. Built-in automatic ice makers add 15 to 36 kWh per year and are the most failure-prone refrigerator part.

Water dispenser. Yes/No. Through-door dispensers require a water line connection but add minimal energy.

Wi-Fi connectivity. Yes/No. Wi-Fi-enabled models support smart features (door alerts, remote diagnostics) at a small standby energy cost.

Smart features. A generic indicator of broader Wi-Fi + app integration. Less specific than the Wi-Fi field alone.

Door style. French door, side-by-side, bottom freezer, top freezer, built-in column, compact. The layout choice.

Finish options. Stainless steel, black stainless, fingerprint-resistant stainless, white, panel-ready. The finish affects price and sometimes depth.

What the spec sheet doesn't show

Five things spec sheets typically omit:

Noise level (dB). Some manufacturers publish it; many don't. The compressor noise floor matters in open-plan kitchens.

Real-world reliability. Spec sheets describe the new appliance, not the 5-year-old appliance. Reliability data comes from third-party surveys (Yale Appliance, Servato, Consumer Reports) and from manufacturer service-call records.

Door swing arc. Many spec sheets show the door dimensions but not the actual swing path. Calculate from the door width.

Authorized service network density. Whether your area has dealers and technicians for the brand. Check separately.

How to compare two spec sheets

A simple framework:

Step 1: confirm both fit your kitchen. Width within budget, depth-with-handles within budget, height within budget. Both must pass; otherwise compare different models.

Step 2: confirm both have the capacity you need. Total cubic feet within your target range.

Step 3: compare kWh per cubic foot. The lower number is more efficient.

Step 4: compare feature sets. Match the features you actually want; don't pay for ones you won't use.

Step 5: compare price per cubic foot. The lower number is better value within the same feature tier.

Three patterns to watch for.

Capacity inflated by including door bins. Some manufacturers list the maximum theoretical capacity, including door bins; others list useable shelf capacity. The number is close but not identical. Cross-check the fresh-food vs. freezer split.
